Located at 145 Fleet St, London EC4A 2BU, UK you’ll find this crazy old place.
I was looking for fish and chips and this came up in a yelp search. I saw the photos and that’s all it took.
This is one of the strangest places I’ve ever eaten. The food was fine, nothing to write home about, but then that’s not why you go to this establishment.
We entered through an alley off the main road. We were greeted by the bartender, who was sweeping sawdust off of the floor, she instructed us to head down the stairs because the upstairs dining room was closing. We went down a set of stairs, then a second set of stairs, to find a small dining room, but no bar.
We found another set of stairs and continued our descent. After yet a 4th set of stairs, we entered a long room with communal tables and a bar. We approached and placed our order. We were given a buzzer and told to find a spot.
Having dinner and beers that far underground was a bit unnerving. I liked it when we were descending into the dungeon – but right after eating, I had the urge to dig up to the light- we finished our drinks on the ground floor. It’s definitely worth a gander, but if you are a top dweller, you may want to limit your time in the dank dark basement that is Ye Old Cheshire Cheese.
Happy subterranean eating & drinking.
